Alexandre Zagorinsky
Alexandre Zagorinsky

Alexandre Zagorinsky was born in Moscow in 1962 and graduated in cello studies from the Moscow Conservatory in 1986. Between 1991 and 2000 he was the cello-group concertmaster for the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic; since 2000 he has served as the principal cellist of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, with which he is a frequent soloist. He is likewise a frequent soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic.

Zagorinsky has earned prizes at several national and international music competitions, including at the All-Russian Music Competition (1985), the 5th International Chamber Music Competition in Trapani, Italy (1988), and the 9th Tchaikovsky Competition in 1990. He has earned the distinguished title of "Honored Artist of Russia."

Maestro Zagorinsky currently maintains an active performing and recording schedule, appearing in the most distinguished music halls of Moscow and other major cities of Russia, as well as around the world. His repertoire is quite large, extending from the classical and romantic staples to contemporary works - with a particular interest in the latter, as demonstrated in the recordings found here at the Classical Archives. Indeed, he has built his reputation in part through close contacts with a number of top Russian composers, including Edison Denisov, Yuri Kasparov, Alexandre Rosenblatt, and others - often giving world premier performances. The recordings included here at the Classical Archives also include several jazz-oriented works by the composer-pianist Nikolai Kapustin. Among other outstanding performers he has worked with include pianists Alexey Shmitov and Yuri Rozum, as well as conductors V.Sinaisky, Y.Simonov, Constantine Orbelian. We are delighted to feature the music of this talented performer.

Reviews

"This is music [Tansman] that can appear to drift aimlessly in the wrong hands, so it is a particular pleasure to encounter performances of such overwhelming sensitivity and commitment. Zagorinsky and Shmitov sound spellbound by Tansman's wide-ranging sound world."
Fanfare Magazine (USA)

"The soloist A.Zagorinsky can be compared with M.Rostropovich. It is the best performance I have ever heard [of the Haydn Cello Concerto]. The last part demonstrated virtuosity and expression of the performer. After the performance, the crowd shouted "bravo" and gave a heart-felt and lasting ovation."
Halsinge Kuriren (Sweden)

"The performance of the soloist Alexander Zagorinsky was undoubtedly of a high class. He managed to communicate with us with brilliant logic and decisiveness, which are possible only at the expense of deep penetration of the composer's score. This was especially well seen in the long cadenza, in which the soloist proved a master of instrumental technique of the first rank."
ABC Madrid (Spain)
